Starting with the Woolsey Hall, Gensler has developed a 10-year strategic campus master planfor Wichita State University, strategically positioning it at the nexus of the main campus and the Innovation Campus to create both a physical andsymbolic hub that seamlessly integrates traditional academia with forward-looking business and innovation ecosystems.

——Meghan Webster, Gensler
“With increased choices for learning and working, the purpose of the physical campus is shifting. As institutions are redesigning and investing in spaces that maximize the campus experience, business schools have emerged as economic engines that fuel the local and global community — leading research and commercialization, strengthening the talent pipeline, and forging industry connections. By creating highly connective business school “ecosystems,” where public and private sectors are working together to build synergies between work and education, there is significant untapped potential to help cities and communities thrive.”

Developed through an inclusive visioning process with more than 300 faculty, students, and industry partners, the design was informed by a workplace performance index survey and space utilization modeling. This data-driven approach enabled a flexible, collaborative program that accommodates 20% growth over the next decade within an efficient footprint.

Strategically located at the hinge between Wichita State’s historic academic campus and the Innovation Campus, Woolsey Hall serves as a physical and symbolic connector. The campus spine is intentionally routed through the atrium, linking the university’s academic tradition with its forward-looking business and innovation ecosystem.

The architecture of Woolsey Hall reflects Wichita’s dual identity as an aerospace and agricultural capital. Wrapped in a zinc shell, the gently curved exterior pays elegant tribute to the region’s deep aviation legacy, while interlocking wood panels evoke the surrounding wheat fields and agricultural roots of the university. Large expanses of glass soften the façade and allow the building to glow at night, serving as a welcoming beacon for evening students and the wider community. Together, these materials establish a new, inviting face for the Barton School—one that resonates with both the campus context and the industries that define Wichita.

Inside, Woolsey Hall is a master class in contemporary educational space, designed to mirror today’s dynamic work environments. Flexible active-learning classrooms, labs, and executive meeting rooms enable seamless shifts between instruction modes and project-based learning, while fostering connections with companies on the Innovation Campus. More than 20 group study, interview, and meeting rooms—along with open and enclosed study areas—are distributed throughout the building to support focus, collaboration and spontaneous interaction.

Organized around a central atrium, Woolsey Hall brings together learning, meeting, and workspaces that activate the heart of the school. A grand staircase with wide risers doubles as an inviting gathering space, encouraging both formal and spontaneous interactions. For the first time, faculty departments and administration are co-located in a connected suite of 72 offices, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and deeper engagement with students. Business centers, institutes, and industry partners are seamlessly integrated, creating a vibrant hub for real-world learning and partnership.

Design Implications
——Gensler
“An outstanding business school design not only crafts diverse, welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces to foster high-quality learning and innovation but also leverages forward-looking program design to amplify its strengths and serve as a bridge between the university, industry, and the community. In doing so, it continuously empowers regional economic development and industrial upgrading. The W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University stands as a successful example of this approach, and also offers important insights for the planning and design of business schools in China.”——Yan Dan, Gensler Greater China’s Education Practice Area Leader
