Xi’an Siyuan University – Sports Hall Concept Design

The proposal adopts a bold and dynamic architectural language, reflecting the energy of sports and the vitality of student life. The main volume is defined by tense, vibrant forms that evoke movement and competition, while the twenty-meter-high entrance hall, framed by a glass façade, establishes a direct dialogue with the campus central axis, creating a ceremonial gateway.The interior is designed for maximum flexibility. The ground floor accommodates indoor activities such as ping pong, martial arts, fitness, and body building, organized along a central corridor with integrated storage and changing facilities. The second floor is dedicated to basketball training, featuring two courts with mobile stands that can be reconfigured into a single competition court with full spectator seating. Support spaces complete the functional distribution on the third floor.The building’s façade is clad in perforated orange metal panels, which by day express a compact and dynamic mass, and by night transform into a luminous lantern, as the interior lighting softly filters through. This duality gives the gymnasium both a strong daytime presence and an inviting nighttime identity. The concept conveys the competitive spirit of sport, the vibrancy of youth, and the symbolic value of the university, making it a distinctive icon within the campus.

Organization: The gymnasium features a monumental double-height main entrance (20 m), visually connected to the campus through a large glazed façade.

Ground floor (2,400 m²): dedicated to indoor activities such as ping pong, martial arts, taekwondo, fitness, and body building, with flexible layouts, equipment storage, and naturally lit changing facilities.

Second floor (2,400 m²): designed with two basketball courts and mobile stands; for competitions, the layout transforms into a single central court with lateral seating.

Third floor (324 m²): houses supporting functions.

Architectural Character: Defined by sharp, dynamic forms that embody energy and youth.

Materials: The perforated orange metal façade presents a compact, solid volume during the day and transforms into a luminous, transparent surface at night.
