BORN BY WATER
Dongguan is a city shaped by water, thriving and flourishing along its rivers. Rivers and shorelines have long defined its cultural foundation. Longwan is located in the western part of Dongguan, within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao economic corridor, bordering the Pearl River estuary. Supported by three major waterways: the southern branch of the Dongjiang River, the Zhongtang Waterway, and the Fenxi River, the area encompasses about 70 kilometers of shoreline, making it Dongguan’s most resource-rich and development-ready waterfront. As history and urban development have evolved, riverside life has continually transformed and the waterfront has gradually become a key driver of Dongguan’s renewal.

Longwan Wetland Park, the core node of the Three Rivers Six Banks, was designated as the first demonstration section and renovated by L&A Design. The exhibition “NEW WAVES OF DONGGUAN” is situated at the park’s main entrance plaza, with the exhibition hall redesigned by Fabersociety. Before the renovation, the site under a winding corridor structure was cluttered, non-functional, and enclosed by temporary fencing. Following the renovation, the exhibition hall now opens toward Longwan, integrating with the surrounding wetland landscape.

The exhibition takes water culture as its narrative thread, bringing Longwan into the exhibition space. The design opens up the building façade and employs a solid-above amd transparent-below composition. Lower glazing brings the wetland landscape indoors, creating a seamless connection between the exhibition hall and the park, and making nature an integral part of the exhibition narrative.

TRIANGULAR MODULUS

We introduced a fixed triangular modular into the site, which had previously been reduced to a cluttered storage area for construction waste. This system creates continuous, uniform yet flexible units, enriching spatial layers and forming a winding, dynamic exhibition flow. It also provides an efficient and straightforward method for spatial organization during the short construction period.

SPACE GROWTH
The overall color scheme of the exhibition hall is primarily orange, echoing the tones of Longwan’s waterfront. Long table displays simulate the meandering form of the shoreline, weaving together the exhibition narrative. The backdrop walls are designed with gray spray-painted corrugated wood panels, achieving cost control while enhancing visual continuity. Additionally, acrylic panels and installations of varying sizes form an open and lively interface for exhibition information.

The site context featured a series of irregular pitched roofs. To focus visitors’ attention on the exhibition and displays, semi-transparent skylights were installed in the ceiling. They mitigate the visual disruption of the irregular roof, reinforce the overall coherence of the triangular modular system, and subtly guide the visitors’ circulation through the space.

To better enhance interaction with the wetland park, a triangular reception desk at the entrance defines a publicly accessible corner of the space. Movable revolving doors further subdivide the area, allowing for independent use while preserving flexibility for spatial connectivity.

“INITIATIVE” opens the narrative with a large-scale map at the entrance, clearly illustrating the historical recreational planning of the Three Rivers Six Banks, spanning approximately 70 kilometers in length and covering a total area of 48.7 square kilometers. The second section, “DISCOVERY”, follows the Dongjiang River as a guiding thread, tracing its ecological system and cultural heritage while unfolding the history of Dongguan’s tradition of “living along the water.” From both ecological and cultural perspectives, visitors gain insight not only into the Dongjiang River’s profound influence on the city’s development, but also into water culture as a vital source of local identity.

“MASTERPLAN” further presents the city’s riverside development strategies by examining its historical evolution, planning achievements, and key projects. The “DEBUT” section showcases the phased achievements of the riverside demonstration segment of the Three Rivers Six Banks. At the core of the exhibition, a large-scale model based on Dongguan’s waterways reconstructs the city’s waterfront layout, while acrylic components carefully render representative shoreline infrastructure, allowing visitors to understand the relationship between the city and its waterfront. A before-and-after photo wall is displayed alongside the model, illustrating how the first phase landscape design of the demonstration segment responds to the interplay between nature and urban development, while highlighting Dongguan’s distinctive riverside character.

结语
LOOKING AHEAD

At sunset, the park glows in golden light, and people come out from their homes, filling the space with joy. Laughter, footsteps, lively conversations, games, singing, and dancing bring the park to life. The exhibition hall is envisioned as a calm, reflective corner within the wetland park, yet open and welcoming, embracing Longwan.
