PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE store by Tokujin Yoshioka

In 2009, the PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE retail space first opened its doors in Tokyo‘s upscale shopping district of Aoyama. Last week, the store moved a few doors down the road – Miyuki dori, to be precise – to bigger premises. Occupying three voluminous, light-filled floors of the brand new Palace Miyuki building, the store features an interior design by acclaimed Tokyo-based architect and longtime ISSEY MIYAKE collaborator Tokujin Yoshioka. The design codes are rooted in Yoshioka’s long-standing vision of a translucent space through a refined combination of glass and aluminium. On the ground floor, a large floor-to-ceiling wall displays a range of glass-encased colourful garments like art and is paired with a rigid configuration of twelve glass display cabinets, while garment display units flank the setting on two sides. Specially structured hanger rods, designed to make the clothing appear to be floating in midair, express the lightness of the collection. Here, the PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE collection is presented, while one floor up, more apparel, accessories and bags can be found. The third floor accommodates a super sized fitting room. In celebration of the store opening, the limited-edition Aoyama Colours collection has been released, which includes tops, cardigans and pants. © superfuture
