The hotel is the home of a closely guarded secret. In 1911, after one Vincenzo Perugia successfully committed the theft of the century by stealing the Mona Lisa from inside the Louvre Museum, it was in one of the hotel’s rooms that he hid his valuable prize for several days… The masterpiece was only found two years later in Italy, when the thief attempted to sell it on to an antiques dealer in Florence. He received a light sentence on account of his motives: he merely wanted to restore the “national treasure” to its homeland, Italy, as he considered that it had been “stolen by Bonaparte”. The Gioconda would later be exhibited throughout Italy before finally being returned to Paris, on 4th January 1914. And so, to commemorate the centenary of the painting’s return to France, the hotel, renamed for the occasion, reopened its doors after a complete renovation, to create a cosy, mellow atmosphere in the lap of luxury. The hotel’s very own, unique “Da Vinci Code” works its magic spell, steeped in historical opulence and the graceful elegance of Italian and French appointments and melanges.
