Back in the mid-1970s, WATG (formerly known as WWAT&G) designed the iconic Garden Wing of the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. This was a landmark project that marked WATG’s official foray of WATG into the Asian frontier.
Exuding luxury as a low-rise building with setback terraces, spacious guest rooms and lush tropical garden views, the project was completed and opened in 1978, breaking the stereotype that hotels needed to be high-rise buildings in order to be luxurious.
Our innovative design has turned what once was a cold building into a vibrant tropical garden. Despite its location at Orchard Road, Singapore’s central business district, the hotel is an enclaved urban oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Upon its opening, the project was hailed as a masterpiece. Decades later, this highly original building still retains its character and charm. Shangri-La's Garden Wing in Singapore continues to be regarded as Asia's – if not the world's – most luxurious hotel. It is located deep in the downtown area on Singapore's Orchard Road and attracts guests from all over the world with its unique beauty.
The Garden Wing has a total of 161 guest rooms, each complemented with a floating curvilinear balcony the are all connected for a continuous fauna garland. The milky white grainy walls mimic the corals on the seabed, and the lush plants and flowers evoke a fairytale atmosphere to the building, while creating an inviting and cosy urban oasis for all who visit.
These vertical gardens in the sky not only provide shade and decoration to regulate comfortable temperatures for guests, they also allow for a subtle transition between public and private spaces, highlighting the importance of greenery in the city. Guests can enjoy both the city view and pool view from their room windows, while also overlooking the exquisite tropical garden landscaping on the corridor side.
At the beginning of the project, the biggest challenge WATG faced was to transform a former high-rise hotel into a building with larger, more luxurious rooms and low-rise balconies. Taking inspiration and cues from nature, the team finally decided to implement a curvilinear design to match the arched structure of the original building.
An abundance of vegetation introduces colour and privacy to the lobby atrium and corridors. Landscape details such as lush foliage, waterfalls, bridges and paths imbue the interior with a paradise-like ambience, making it more in line with the image of Singapore’s “Garden City”. The completion of this project also marks the rise of "Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts", an Asian luxury hospitality empire that continues to amaze the world.
