This duplex house presented a challenge: It was located in a Haussmann-style building and was filled with decorative details—lots of them. These decorative details occupied every inch of the main floor, including moldings, fireplaces, mirrors, and murals.

Every few months, the owner changes up the layout with new artwork or sculptures. Speaking of the newly renovated dynamic fireplace, it can be seen carved into multiple platforms for displaying artworks. To break up the rectangular pattern of the room, a pair of Cloud lamps designed by Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert are installed off-center, and the modular sofa system EKO designed by Christophe Delcourt is arranged around a set of Sabourin Coste aluminum coffee tables, creating a "coffee table pit" atmosphere.

There is a lot of beautiful contemporary art displayed throughout the space, including large figurative paintings by Craig Hanna, several mixed media works by Eva Jospin, and sculptures by artists such as Kader Attia and Simone Fattal. To achieve this goal and create a space that is more in line with the contemporary aesthetic, the home needed to be designed to be more neutral.

Some changes were easy to make (like saying goodbye to the giant gilded mirror), while others required a more structured approach, like replacing a redundant fireplace with a warm cherry mantel or moving the staircase. But what about those delicate moldings clogging the walls on the main floor? Those needed a complete overhaul.

I actually wanted to leave this red and yellow label on the wall before painting it, and it now sits behind a sculpture by Kader Attia. Custom cherry wood shelving warms up a wall that was once a fireplace, complementing the stone desk by Amélie Maison d’Art. The repositioned staircase now dominates the entrance, and a new flat wall covers the molding below to create space for one of the owner’s most treasured paintings, a work by Craig Hanna.

A new central staircase leads to a modern basement that has renounced Ottoman-style decor. Batiik Studio highlighted the change with a mix of contemporary materials: white resin railings snake over a silver travertine platform from Artefacts, while custom cherrywood shelving runs up the walls.

Rather than erasing the house’s ornate tone, wall panels were designed for specific areas (such as a section of the living room or the wall behind the headboard in the master bedroom) that hide the moldings and sometimes curve around to reduce their bulk. The panels themselves are sculptural and painted white, and each new plane—some smooth and matte, others with a texture similar to a painted surface—runs like a veil along the moldings, creating a clean, modern surface for hanging art. 

As the home is full of Ottoman-style decorative details, the new walls are not permanent (so they can always be removed and the original walls re-exposed if other decorative ideas come up), but they do hide key areas that were almost suffocated by the moldings. The modified “white walls” are more artistic, adding a new layer of modernity and giving the house and the owner’s art room to breathe.

The kitchen is white to match the wall color, and the cabinets are invisible unless you look closely, almost disappearing in the space. The kitchen design did not want to look like an ordinary kitchen, so a sculptural island was designed. A Garnier & Linker Lipari travertine table lamp hangs over the granite countertop by Artefacts in Paris. Retro Scandinavian stools add texture, while wooden doors designed by Batiik Studio lead to a brand new kitchen where food is prepared (to hide clutter).

Batiik Studio designed a one-of-a-kind dining table that can be split into two parts depending on the number of guests (the smaller fixed part frees up space along the wall when not in use for items such as sculptures and flowers). Its wide legs and curved shape add a sense of complexity to the room's otherwise rectangular symmetry. Frédéric Pellenq chairs found at Kolkhoze and a vintage Artichoke lamp designed by Louis Poulsen add further contrast.

In the living room, a multi-faceted fireplace in gray travertine adds a clean geometric shape to the opulent space. Countertops for high and low items extend to the sides and mantel. In the kitchen-dining area, Benichou and Jallet used their talent for custom furniture to create a ceramic-topped wooden table that rises to the center of the room and becomes a stage for rotating sculptures and dinner parties.

The apartment’s modern basement is a different story. There are no comparable moldings or historic charms. It’s a blank slate that allows them to do what they do best: create.

The craft room has only one small window, and all surfaces, even the custom furniture and resin floor, are finished in white to make the space as bright as possible. A vintage wooden table is paired with a vintage Pierre Chapo stool, laid on a beige Toulemonde Bochart Lion rug, adding a touch of warmth to the light color palette.

Throughout the design, a space was envisioned for craft activities such as painting, pottery, and other creative activities, which inspired a studio next to the new staircase. Uneven geometric patterns were created on the plaster walls, adding a playful dimension to the previously monotonous surface. Tetris-like shapes add high definition to the plaster walls of the media room, which indulges in a deep blue hue, one of the few bright colors in the project and the perfect backdrop for streaming movies. In one of the guest bedrooms, furniture was used as building blocks, using square cast concrete blocks of varying sizes to build a bed frame, shower screen, and bookcase; the thick shapes create a base and surface for more beloved artworks.

 Ultimately, the client’s furniture was easily placed in the redesigned home, including some vintage and collectibles, adding warmth and texture. When seeing the finished furniture - beyond the physical version of the 3D model, with art hanging on the walls and sunlight pouring in from the windows overlooking the beautiful garden - the objects and interior architecture complement each other and are a perfect match made in heaven. There was a dialogue between the two, and they eventually merged into one, as it should be.

This duplex house also has a huge garden. The "large forest" behind this villa is very fascinating. It is like a rare treasure in the center of Paris.

The new curved wall in the corner of the master bedroom acts like a curtain, hiding the moldings and forming a niche. This architectural technique also extends to the wooden floor, which uses a special resin from Propose Paris to create a corner for the custom bed, which is cleverly covered with a Schumacher carpet and covered with Oeuvres Sensibles bedding.

The media room makes clever use of geometric shapes, with the hollow design in the plaster wall creating a playful shape next to the storage bookcase. The Togo sofa by Ligne Roset creates a casual atmosphere, while the Jean-Pierre Viot coffee table by Aurélien Gendras adds texture to the space.

The new bathroom at the entrance creates an intimate atmosphere. The ceiling is lower than the rest of the room, so we wanted it to feel like a box, and the walls are made of warm wood. The main part of the bathroom is paved with dark green tiles from Studio Neue Tres Chic, one of the few bright colors in the entire project.

This is an outdoor courtyard space, featuring a simple and natural style. The light beige walls and floors create a soft atmosphere, and the arched shape adds architectural layers.

The wooden long table with benches is the core area for communication and dining, and the utensils on the table are rich in details. There are sinks and other facilities on the wall, which are both beautiful and practical. Green plants (such as shrubs and small trees) make the space more lively, and the overall atmosphere conveys a leisurely and comfortable living atmosphere. It is a good place to relax and rest, reflecting the creation of a natural and comfortable living space.
