We live in our courtyards, we live at the foot of the walls. The walls hold our memories and define the character of a space.
Interior walls form a courtyard, creating a private, enclosed area. Exterior walls connect the inside to the outside, linking different spaces.

We create a vibrant inner courtyard, enveloped in security,
by selectively activating, reinforcing, and extending the existing walls.
These partially activated walls dismantle the rigid boundary between inside and outside,
connecting to form new spatial clusters.
This process establishes a variety of new spatial relationships, linking the courtyard, the streets, and the interior spaces.

Our master plan for creating space is to use light, flexible approaches to integrate new areas and generate a variety of experiences.
By establishing a broad framework, we can flexibly choose the right methods for any setting—be it indoors, in semi-covered spaces, in courtyards, or in nature. This ensures a cohesive and unified architectural layout.
At the same time, all of this happens within one single, overarching framework. This means we can seamlessly restore old roofs, connect indoor and outdoor semi-spaces, create venues for temporary events, and design multi-level areas for enjoying nature—all working together as a whole.

This design merges areas that were once simple, distinct zones of either interior or exterior into a single, unified entity. These transformed spaces become new plazas, street corners, districts, and courtyards, forming a new place where we can truly belong.

日常生活的便利情况,安全层级感的递进关系,成为主要空间布局的指导方向。

The guiding principles for the main spatial layout are derived from the convenience of daily life and the progressive sense of security.
Street & Market Periphery:
The areas along the street and on the outer edge of the market are designed for convenience, allowing for easy access, shopping, and delivery. This zone serves the fresh food market and provides the daily living scenes for the residential community.
Inward Progression:
Moving inward, the space transitions to areas featuring cooked food and snacks, encouraging longer stays. This marks a progression into a slower-paced environment.
Slow-Paced Community Spaces:
On weekends, the market, light dining options, and a community living room are integrated with the vibrant, daily-life spaces to create a secure, slow-paced atmosphere.
Innermost Courtyard Spaces:
Further inward, the courtyard spaces host activities like food gatherings, family parties, and a parent-child dining area, realizing the most intimate and secure functions.

The kind of living space where multiple generations of a family can share their lives together appears once again. In the past, media interviews and audience questions have touched upon this very issue: the spaces of today offer no room for the whole family to share. They have become places where “you can go, but I cannot.” People have asked, “When will there be a place where the entire family can go and enjoy quality time together?” This place is it.

The fresh food market, designed to recreate a vibrant market atmosphere, offers convenience to neighboring residents. Comprising two major sections, it features a clear separation of dirty and clean areas, and effectively groups dry and wet goods. The extensive street frontage provides easy access for parking and goods loading and unloading, situated near the main and secondary entrances for the ease of daily shopping for local residents. Moving further inside, the seamless integration of internal and external spaces ensures a continuous flow for vegetable shopping and market navigation.

Fresh food, meat, vegetables, fruits, non-staple foods, and dry goods are considered for convenience in life, transportation, and operation. In the raw food area, there is independent transportation and storage, clean processing, centralized ventilation and drainage, close to the entrance for short stays, and separated from the cooked food area, which facilitates cleanliness, transportation, and makes the space itself more hygienic, with a clean and tidy environment.

This is a fusion of the atmospheres felt in various international marketplaces. It's down-to-earth, lively, yet urban, hygienic, and overwhelming with a plethora of choices.

The design, combined with the visual appeal of the stalls, is no longer the dirty and messy environment of the past. It can also be filled with an artistic atmosphere, representing a new attitude towards life. The combination of imagery and products means that, just like the products, the space is fresh and vibrant.

向里走,我们来到中心市集。
室内有我们设想的生活场景,

Walking further in, we arrive at the central market. Indoors, there is the life scene we envisioned. Outdoors, between the buildings and spaces, the continuation of wall memories is also used, hoping to recreate the life scenes of alley corners and wall roots.

No longer defined by the previous factory space with a separation of inside and outside, it offers a free-flowing life experience. In terms of layout, the central market is designed as a courtyard within a courtyard, interweaving food and nature. Accessible from both the main and secondary entrances, it is convenient for walking and driving, and composed of various spatial atmospheres such as indoor, semi-indoor, and garden areas. It also connects partially with the fresh food area, maintaining the ambiance of a large market.

Snacks and cooked food can be enjoyed while browsing, connecting the fresh food market with the outdoor courtyard.

The layout of the volumes, with abundant sunlight, combines vegetation and dining, creating visual connections everywhere. The multi-story architectural volumes concentrate available commercial dining space and offer various levels of privacy and business types according to the floor distribution. The north-facing facade features a scenic alleyway, while the south-facing facade boasts lush gardens and thriving vegetation, creating a perfect courtyard.

The semi-enclosed volume group, deep in the courtyard, offers safety and tranquility. The independent annex building features high windows and spacious areas. The transparent single volume has an ultra-high single-story space with north-south dual landscapes. The two-story building provides a comfortable, sunlit courtyard with a panoramic view.

The building itself can, of course, consider different rental and operational methods, with an immersive landscape connection, seeking content that can highlight and complement this feature. The house for handicraft experiences is open and bright, quite suitable for artistic work, handicrafts, and is connected to contemporary family life and parent-child activities. Then there's the children's playground that everyone finds suitable. Indeed, with a strong sense of security and a well-connected southern facade, it becomes a very special children's playground.

LLLab. is a design studio originated in Stuttgart, Germany, based in Shanghai and Porto operating within the fields of architecture, design, art, urbanism, research and development.
The studio’s work focuses on using design as a tool to improve social and cultural life through various scales, from urban projects to micro-architecture or installations.
