For 70 years, people have welcomed IKEA into their homes. Now it’s our turn to welcome you to ours. The IKEA Museum will be opening on June 30, 2016 in Älmhult, Sweden. Here, we will be sharing everything that makes IKEA what it is today, and what it may be tomorrow: the ideas and the driving forces, the people and the furniture, the mistakes and the lessons learned.
Exhibitions The Main Exhibition at the IKEA Museum is divided into three themes: Our Roots, Our Story and Your Stories. Would you like to explore a subject that IKEA is particularly interested in right now? Then don't miss our Temporary Exhibition. It's updated twice a year.
Our roots The young Ingvar Kamprad wanted to sell furniture and accessories that were well-designed, worked well and were affordable. What inspired him?  Where did his desire to create a better everyday life for the many people come from?
We take closer look at everyday life in 19th century Småland, Ingvar Kamprad's childhood on Elmtaryd Farm, and the 20th century transformation of Swedish society where a new vision of home led the way. Our Roots explores the society, living conditions and spirit that prevailed in the Sweden that fostered a young boy's emerging business.
Our story Reflections, ideas, solutions, successes, failures and lesson learned - some of the many things that have shaped IKEA and continue to drive it forwards. This is what you'll find in the Our Story section, where we start with the opening of the very first IKEA store in 1958 and then take a look at what's happened over the years.
Your stories People use IKEA products in many different ways. In the Your Stories section, we visit the homes of a few folks who have kindly shared their stories and shown us the ways they use BILLY bookcase and KLIPPAN sofa.
Contributions have been collected via a blog and tell the stories of everything from the shoe collector to the Barbie buff to the gingerbread-flavoured KLIPPAN sofa.
#IKEAtemporary RIGHT NOW IN THE SPACE:
#IKEAtemporary explores life in and around the kitchen of the future. Here, IKEA has collaborated with designers, architects and design students to create five kitchens where life at home is truly in focus.
#IKEAtemporary has been taken directly from the 2015 Milan Furniture Fair.
A museum for the curious The IKEA Museum addresses everyone curious about IKEA. Visitors will among other things get a better understanding how we work with design, product development, suppliers, logistics, sustainability and the environment, communication and marketing. We also explain our origins, our values and our company culture.
Of course, we tell the story of Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, and how he and all his co-workers set up his business.
The IKEA Museum features a main exhibition and a temporary exhibition, as well as restaurant, shop and educational facilities. The museum’s archives and collections are vital parts of the operation, as is our school programme that will focus on entrepreneurship, technology and design as well as history and society.
IKEA Museum is led by IKEA Museum Manager Carina-Kloek-Malmsten.
The world's first IKEA store The IKEA Museum is in the original building that housed the first IKEA store, which opened in 1958 and closed in 2012 when the new store opened in Älmhult. The exterior of the building has to large parts been restored to its original form, following the drawings of architect Claes Knutson: the arcade runs along the long side of the facade as well as a line of V-shaped pillars and storefronts. The style - international modernism - is back in Älmhult while the interior has been created to meet the needs of a modern museum.
We welcome you to the IKEA Museum in Älmhult – the heart of the IKEA world, where our journey began.
