Education Campus at the Wiesenweg, Stadt Brandenburg and der Havel
+BRIEF DESCRIPTION+
The " Havelwiesen Quarter” is a future-oriented new part of the city - for flora, for fauna and for all generations. The framework plan integrates nature and urban expansion with a holistic approach. We pay great attention to the natural and urban potential of the site on the edge of the city center. The eponymous landscape structure of the "Havelwiesen" offers a common habitat for nature and for people. The arrangement and construction of the new public buildings relates to the landscape system and promotes sustainable coexistence.
The respective location of each building - to the forest, along the meadows, by the river - becomes an inspiring design task to which we invite children, young people and adults. We promote alternative, non-commercial development models for residential construction.

Feedback from the final colloquium: "Your work impressed and convinced me personally in the depth of the discussion, in your careful, decidedly eco-sensitive attitude and in your approach and procedure, which is so consistently related to the location, as well as of course in the high quality of the design proposal."
This wonderful city, rich in water and history, deserves a careful approach to urban design. We are delighted that our regenerative plan for the “Havelwiesen Quarter” was welcomed and adopted by the local stakeholders.

Havelwiesen Quarter. A natural and urban extension for the future
The "Havelwiesen Quartier" is a future-oriented new part of the city of Brandenburg - for flora, for fauna and for all generations. The framework plan of MLA+ OKRA offers solutions for an integrated extension of nature and the city on three levels:
Structure linked to city + water + nature
Development in line with the character of Brandenburg
The floods of recent years, the extreme heat of summer 2022, the extinction of species and the scarcity of fossil fuels this winter make it all too clear how intertwined our human life is with the natural forces of the earth. It is the task of the 21st century to create a new balance. The city of Brandenburg has diverse traditions in the interaction of water, nature and city, which are rediscovered in the master plan. The edges of the planning area have the potential to gain importance as a natural habitat for local flora and fauna. Selected areas have a higher value for citizens of all generations. Backsides are waiting to be rediscovered.
Master plan for flora and fauna, children and adults
Landscape structure as a basis for district development
To restore the lost connection between the soul and life above is a core task of urban planning today. Therefor the landscape structure is the basis of our neighborhood plan.
The eponymous "Havelwiesen" (Havel river meadow) connects the waterscape in the north with the natural areas in the south of the site. As a meadow landscape near the river, the central landscape area refers to the original character of the planning area as wet meadows. The "Havelwiesen" are deliberately generously dimensioned and offer both people and nature a habitat. The sports facilities of the schools are part of the "Havelwiesen". Their spatial organization, water management and planting are nature oriented in order to harmonize the transition between city and nature.
In the North buildings are set back from the river and give room to improve the banks of the Havel. We distinguish clearly between natural, recreational and active zones. The riparian zones are designed in layers of varying intensity in order to combine the main use with natural and/or human functions.
Building with and for citizens
Building with and for children and young people
The construction of a district in a special location, with a large proportion of public buildings, offers a city the opportunity to shape the future together with its citizens. As urban planners, we provide guidance for future building designs together with citizens of all generations.
As the "Havelwiesenschule" (Meadow School) and "Waldschule" (Forest School) the two new school buildings have a location quality that provides inspiration for the design. For the two residential courtyards, a development model should be considered that limits property speculation and enables citizens to build a city themselves "in Brandenburg style".
+ Lost harmony with local character
The Havel water system characterizes Brandenburg city and region. People have always lived and worked with and next to the water. Modern technology decoupled this close connection between human needs and natural systems. Today we are facing the effects of this dominance of human interests over nature in the form of climate change.
+ Island of the future
Flood maps draw a new urban structure in times of climate change: in addition to the historic city islands, the planning area is also surrounded by water areas. Our planning offers solutions for the design of this "Island of the Future" at the transition between city and nature.

+ Landscape structure as a basis
To restore the lost connection between the soil and life above ground is a core task of 21st century planning. A new landscape system forms the basis of our district plan.

+ Havelwiesen district as Ecoduct
The integration of landscape and urban planning is an important basis for climate protection. Near-natural open spaces tie in with local blue-green structures and optimize the microclimate. The landscape system, climate-adaptive green roofs and natural open space designs promote regional biodiversity. Retention areas are part of the local water cycles from roof to soil.

+ Landscape schools
The new schools are located between the central green area "Havelwiesen", the forest and a lost stream. They have a direct connection to the landscape - a quality that inner-city schools can rarely offer.

+ Mobility transition through active mobility
The dense network of footpaths and cycle paths encourages walking and cycling. Mobility hubs and e-charging stations support shared mobility models. The neighborhood is car free. Except for public transport and emergency traffic, the Wiesenweg is no longer continuously passable.

+ Building with and for citizens
For the school design stages we recommend inviting students to think for themselves about their school in this special place. For the residential courtyards, we suggest a development model that enables citizens to build a city themselves “in Brandenburg style.”
