Softroom were approached by the team behind Wahaca to create an interior for a sister offering to their hugely successful series of Mexican eateries.
Mexican food in London is fast becoming cartoonish, with stereotypically themed burrito bars crowding the market. The team behind Wahaca wanted to deliver something that honoured the city of their brand’s originating country and restored integrity to the burrito bar genre.
Inspired by the energy of Mexico City – ‘Distrito Federal’ or ‘DF’ to locals - Mexico DF would be a place that was fast but no less serious about food. It would also have more of the confident Americanism that has been a major cultural influence on Mexico City. If Wahaca was “the market” then Mexico DF would be “the city.”
