Text description provided by the architects. This artist studio and residence for textile and ceramic artist Miranda Fengyuan Zhang is set at the edge of a forested hill and flat farmland in Germantown, New York. Much like Zhang's work, the building is a study in duality, texture, and tradition.
The structure reinterprets the area's prevalent agricultural typology, a traditional barn, through sculptural operations of bending, carving, and tilting. This dynamic manipulation of form orients the entrance and artist studio to the north and the living spaces toward the west, creating distinct zones for both creativity and calm.
Clerestory windows bring natural light into the studio. Both the studio and the living room open onto a shared deck that looks out over the farmland.
A second-floor deck connects the mezzanine bedroom to the tranquil forested hill, enhancing the balance of built and natural, dynamic creativity and silent privacy.
The black-stained cedar shingles that wrap the exterior and roof lend the building a natural texture, while poured-in-place concrete at the southern and northern ends is stepped back to accentuate the barn silhouette.
