Cloth Tail Bakery in Dongyang, Jinhua, presents a curious symbiosis of aged timber and concrete. This is not merely a shop, but rather an organic entity that breathes slowly, constructed from bricks, timber, cement, and the aroma of freshly baked bread.

The entrance floor was paved with charcoal-black square tiles, their joints grouted with coarse sand, yielding a dull crunch beneathfoot like treading on beach sand;Upon entering, one finds ruins of faded blue bricks piled high, with mossy green shadows creeping through the cracks; An array of handcrafted bricks seems to stage an endless private exhibition: coarse red bricks, sombre dark bricks, melancholic blue bricks, warm brown bricks, plain off-white bricks, and glass bricks—each like a solidified, frozen amber of whisky, capturing the shifting light only to let it slip away silently. The artistic paint applied to the walls, with its meticulously crafted roughness and mottled finish, resembles pages repeatedly rubbed by countless dry seasons. Each minute crack and undulating grain whispers of the passage of time. The old timber had long since lost its fiery edge, its hue deepened by age, its grain polished smooth and distinct by time and countless hands. The edges curled slightly or cracked, like the gentle wrinkles of an elderly person.

The bar counter and central island are cast in-situ concrete, their stark grey concealing a warmth beneath.A small bunch of wildflowers was casually stuck into an old milk bottle, like an image plucked from one of Murakami’s essays.

Cloth Tail Bakery requires no ostentatious decoration, nor does it rely on contrived photo shoots.Cloth Tail Bakery has become a theatre: the bread is the script, the timber the stage, the brick and mortar the silent supporting cast, and you, the storyteller.
