A villa with unobstructed views over Ubud’s tropical forest, Bali
This project was conceived for a scenic plot in Ubud, offering sweeping views of the tropical forest and sunset lines. The architecture is designed to create a memorable villa that serves as a self-standing attraction: open façades oriented toward the vista, expansive sliding glazing, a usable roof, and multiple leisure scenarios within one plot. The property was developed as part of a client’s investment strategy, designed for visual appeal, functional ease, and effortless management via short-term rental agencies.
• Plot area – 9.6 ares
• Floors – 3
Client’s Task
The task was to create a premium short-term rental asset based on an existing structure. The villa needed to impress through architecture while comfortably accommodating up to ten guests. The goal was to transform a poorly conceived original structure into a fully functional product aligned with Bali’s rental market, without compromising structural integrity or proportions.
Concept
The design follows a functional minimalist approach with a tropical character. All primary spaces are oriented toward panoramic views of the ravine and sunset. Boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve through fully recessed sliding panoramic systems. The architects reinforced a steel frame, redistributing loads to allow for large cantilevers and open spans. Key attention was given to creating striking attraction points: an infinity pool, patio, rooftop terraces with jacuzzis, a billiard area, a rooftop bar, and multiple visual nodes ideal for photography and leisure.
Architecture
The villa balances the lightness of its steel frame with the tactile warmth of natural materials. Façades are clad in local Surabaya stone and wooden panels from native species that harden over time. Panoramic glazing is flush-integrated, with vertical supports concealed within the frame, giving the villa a monolithic, cohesive appearance. The clean horizontal roofline completes the composition, creating a sense of a floating volume. Structurally, it is an advanced engineering solution with reinforced cantilevers and minimal supports.
The base consists of a monolithic slab with an upgraded steel frame adapted to new spans and overhangs. Exterior finishes combine Surabaya stone and local wooden panels. Glazing is recessed with sliding systems hidden within walls. The infinity pool includes integrated lighting and filtration. Individual water heaters serve each bedroom to optimize efficiency during partial occupancy. Air-conditioning, fresh air ventilation, and concealed stormwater management are integrated; a diesel generator ensures uninterrupted operation.
• Full living area exposure: glass retracts completely into the walls
• Infinity pool with palm integrated into the composition
• Second-floor terraces with private jacuzzis
• Usable rooftop for evening events
• Instagrammable zones throughout, ideal for rentals and promotion
• Built on the existing frame without compromising premium quality
