Old City Condominium
project gallery
“[kYd] are not only excellent architects and designers but wonderful people to work with – professional, creative, accommodating, and dependable. We are very pleased we opted to work with them on two different projects.”
– Arnon D., Homeowner

First Place, Custom Residential
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Located in a 19
th
century building, the Old City Condominium balances an industrial vibe and eclectic art collection with a modern aesthetic. kYd worked closely with the married owners to craft a space that suited their lifestyle and accommodated visits from their adult sons.
kYd first addressed the 1,875-sf unit’s awkward 45-foot-long corridor entry. New modulations in ceiling height and timber beams create intimacy while wall niches and built-in storage visually break up the long space. An updated kitchen serves as backdrop to an open concept great room. Ikea cabinet boxes were clad in custom gray doors, and in a nod to the husband’s medical career, the sink features a foot-pedal-operated faucet. The existing wall of cubicle shelving was modified to create a new entry to a former mechanical and laundry closet, redesigned to include a pantry.
An oversized pocket door inspired by the condo’s metal fire door forms the gateway to the redesigned primary suite. It includes a primary bedroom and bath, plus a combination study/office/dressing room with a fold-out couch for guests. Draperies serve as circulation and privacy devices to close off the bedroom and create a corridor to the study for when it is used a guest room. The bedroom’s headboard wall of custom built-in cabinetry matches additional custom closets on the opposite wall and continues into the study. Translucent pocket doors extend natural light from the study’s two windows even while affording privacy within the room. When viewed from the bedroom or living room, the clerestory-topped bathroom’s volume glows with light and adds dramatic visual interest while continuing the elegant industrial vibe.
