Woldingham School – Sixth Form Centre
This cutting-edge sixth form centre has directly led to a very positive impact on learning outcomes and wellbeing.
The Vision
Woldingham School envisions a future where students graduate with a strong sense of agency and confidence. To align with this vision, the school recognized the need for a transformation in its learning environments, moving beyond traditional classrooms to create spaces that are inclusive, intentional, and innovative. These new spaces are designed to empower students, enabling them to feel supported as they explore their passions and realise their full potential.
Bringing The Vision To Life
The Library
The Library has evolved from a traditional book storage space to a dynamic, knowledge-centered environment. Inspired by air, it features calming blue hues, ample natural light, and flexible seating, such as wing-backed chairs for focused work and modular sofas for collaboration. Adjustable lighting caters to various needs, and the layout, with shorter shelves in the centre and taller ones along the walls, ensures both safety and visibility.
The Collaboration Room
Inspired by nature, it uses earthy browns and greens to create a flexible space for group activities. Seating options include acoustic booths, tiered seating, and modular arrangements that support fluid movement and interaction. Sound-absorbing materials manage noise, making the room conducive to productive collaboration.
The Independent Study Room
Inspired by water, it promotes focus
and calm. Acoustic panels between desks offer privacy, while the low- stimulation environment is ideal for quiet study. The layout supports easy supervision without disrupting students’ concentration, and a central sofa provides a casual spot for laptop work. This room is separated from social spaces to maintain its quiet purpose.
The Café
Inspired by fire, it is a lively social hub for students and staff. Warm tones of yellow, orange, and red, exposed brick walls and varied seating options create an energetic atmosphere for casual interaction. Acoustic panels ensure noise control, while tiered seating supports different group sizes, fostering a sense of community.
Student Outcomes
The new learning spaces have boosted students’ motivation and improved their approach to independent learning. They enjoy using these areas, which provide a focused environment that fosters autonomy. One student told us, “I love this space so much, so I’m motivated to us it”.
The collaboration spaces and café have also strengthened the sense of community, bringing sixth formers and other year groups closer.
