ESPAI CRÀTER VOLCANOES MUSEUM
The project consists of the design of a new Vulcanology Interpretation Center especially dedicated to the typical volcanic formations of Olot and the Garrotxa area. The proposal does not pretend the future building to be a small volcano, but rather an underground room that enters into a volcano.
The access to this room will take place through a crevice in the ground, a crack completely integrated in the topography that traces an underground path and invites to visit the interior of the volcano. Visitors can enter through this crack in which they will discover a multisensory place where they can enjoy the story about this natural heritage of La Garrotxa.
On the outer surface we will only see a park, a grove with beech and oak trees. Only the bulging of the terrain will make us suspect that a telluric force has deformed the natural relief forming a hill.
The building breathes geology and volcanism by the materials with which it is built and by the geometry of the walls and surfaces. The interior space has been designed with a hall divided into two floors to accommodate the museographic proposal, the documentation center and an integrated multi-purpose room, which will be equally independent and in service to the city.
In terms of sustainability, it is planned to build a pergola with photovoltaic energy plates in the Museum’s car park and to use the “thermal inertia” of the space to make the minimum energy consumption.
