Reinterpreting History on the Upper East Side

This full-floor apartment needed a gut renovation to not only upgrade all the systems and infrastructure, but also to recast the apartment for the owners’ modern art, furnishings and lifestyle. Inspired by the restraint of the Rosario Candela building exterior, the “developer Georgian” interiors were replaced with luxurious but discreet finishes like the full-height white thassos marble paneling of the gallery.

New steel windows with nickel hardware (duplicating the building’s originals) replaced aging 1970s windows, and were used floor-to-ceiling for the wine room to imply a previous fenestration.
