The chain of islands that comprise Hawaii are all formed by ancient volcanoes of which the big island of Hawai’i is the youngest. Each island is characterized by volcanic summits with lush tropical forests on the windward side, and dry grass like plains on the leeward side, yet each island possesses unique micro landscapes, culture, history and amenities to be explored. Long before Westerners arrived, the Hawaiian people created the ahupua‘a, a land division that ran continuously from the mountain to the sea, mauka to makai. Starting with the fundamental idea of the mauka-makai trails, the resort is organized such that the daily experience of moving to and from the private suites to the public areas will occur along a series of streets that are organized to lead you from the uplands down to the sea. This daily ritual of moving down to the sea and back up towards the framed view of the distant volcanic peaks will become a fundamental aspect of the guest experience and will reinforce the ancient and geologic principles of the land, the people and the culture.
