Setting a new standard for clinical training and research in China

Broadway Malyan designed the new facilities for a global medical technology company to support its world-class training programmes across several disciplines, including surgery, minimally invasive procedures, intensive care, internal medicine, and anaesthetics, as well as specialist areas such as cardiovascular, oncology, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, and renal diseases.

The 8,800 sqm centre uniquely integrates cutting-edge medical technology and simulation training systems alongside exhibition and collaboration spaces within a single facility, enhancing clinical skills and improving the learning efficiency of almost 7,000 medical professionals each year.

Visitors arrive at the central lobby, the starting point of their journey. From here, they move up or down via a feature atrium to access the more private and technical areas. Acting as the heart of the building, the atrium is a focal point for public and social interaction, offering a mix of formal and informal spaces that encourage colleagues to connect, exchange ideas and share knowledge.

The flowing, organic forms of the atrium contrast with the hard-edged, rectilinear geometry of the building, embodying the ‘biological’ within the overall composition. Reminiscent of heart chambers, helical strands of DNA or a swirling vortex, the space is dynamic and fluid in character.

To ensure the building integrates harmoniously with its site and the wider city, the design fuses local architectural references with contemporary aesthetics. Level 1 appears to emerge organically from the site’s contours and is clad in local traditional grey-coloured brick, anchoring the building in its local context. In contrast, Level 3 is wrapped in precision-engineered metal cladding, representing the company's commitment to cutting-edge technology. Level 2, the public entrance, is defined by frameless glazing, creating a transparent, open and welcoming environment.
