The ExMacello site is a fascinating site that will be undergoing an extreme transition: from the destruction of life (of millions of animals) to a new source of life for people and nature. Both will – for the first time in a century – coexist and grow together. The architecturally beautiful buildings of the former slaughterhouse will be reconverted into sites of creative production, of urban agriculture and schools. Pavement will make way for livable, healthy soil and gardens will replace the former cages where cows and other creatures were crammed together. Animals will be free to roam the new green environment.
The overall concept of the landscape represents this transition in a special way: Starting in the West (the most dense and urban side) the green is structured in a clear and strict way, referring to the countless cages and the functional layout of the slaughtering process. As one moves on to the east and the South the ‘boxes’ break loose and eventually allow their content to ‘spill out’. Where trees were first gathered in regular grids they are free in the eastern and southern part of the park.
Tracks that were used to transport carcasses could become useful in various, creative ways: like for exhibitions, spaces dividing curtains, light installations or the vertical growth of plants. The main Passarella will become the central connective circulation space with various possibilities for special events of the design school or other cultural and educational institutions. It connects North and South and can become a central focus point within the park.
