Ashoka University
Rai, Haryana
A vibrant, world-class campus for 4,500 liberal arts students outside of New Delhi.
Founded with a philanthropic mission to provide a multidisciplinary environment for liberal arts education based on Ivy League standards, Ashoka University is one of a kind in India. Perkins Eastman’s master plan and architecture for the new campus created an exciting 24-hour environment for learning, working, and living. Combining Indian aesthetics with global best-practice trends, the design team worked to understand and reflect Ashoka’s foundational ideology throughout the design process. Conscious of the interrelated nature of the formal and informal aspects of learning, the campus is organized into concentric circles that bring academic and residential life together. The architecture blend of traditional and modern forms results in strong clean lines and clear hierarchies, softened by delicate screen-work and human-scaled open spaces. Covered walkways between buildings and courtyard clusters provide protection from the elements and informal opportunities for people to connect. Though still a young institution, Ashoka and its architecture already draw the best students from throughout India.
