Description
Originally built in 1855 as a cornmill, Glanmore Hall formed part of the broader Synge Estate, with nearby Glanmore Castle dating to 1835. The estate included a slate quarry and Devils Glen Woods, which supplied the materials for both buildings. Renowned playwright John Millington Synge lived on the estate for most of his life.
Approach
The design strategy was rooted in conservation best practices. All modern additions were removed, returning the building to its original shell. Only essential elements were reintroduced to support the new programme. The goal was not to embellish, but to reveal and celebrate the building’s history, function, and the craftsmanship embedded in its materials.
Execution
Circulation was reimagined by pushing movement to the building’s perimeter, allowing uninterrupted views from gable to gable and floor to roof. New rooms were designed as standalone installations, with oak-panelled inner edges marking the intervention. A once-blocked central entrance was reopened, with a new timber staircase reinstated to serve as the core circulation spine. A restrained palette of timber, stone, and steel underscored the building’s honest character, allowing local craftsmanship in joinery, masonry, and metalwork to take centre stage.
