The Campus South Walk at the University of Chicago reimagined a key east–west corridor as a vibrant, high-performing landscape that unifies three city blocks and links major developments. Conceived as more than circulation, it creates an immersive public space that integrates academic and civic life, connects diverse architectural styles, and establishes a resilient framework for future growth.
Anchored by the
David Rubenstein Forum
, Woodlawn Residential Commons, Study Hotel,
Keller Center
(Harris School of Public Policy), and Campus South Mixed-Use Facility, the Walk ties together distinct buildings through a cohesive material and planting palette, human-scaled spaces, and sustainable infrastructure.
The project also pioneers district-scale landscape infrastructure, centralizing stormwater management with rain gardens, bioinfiltration areas, underground detention, and green roofs that reduce pressure on Chicago’s sewer system.
Coordinating across five major projects and multiple stakeholders, the design delivers a unified, adaptable campus fabric. With regionally sourced materials, native plantings, and pollinator habitats, it reflects a strong commitment to sustainability. Ultimately, the Campus South Walk demonstrates how landscape can connect people, places, and ecological systems into a coherent and resilient whole.
