dialog
Location - Phoenix, Arizona, USA
dialog is a cultural crossroads store and an integral part of a larger adaptive re-use project called TEN-O-ONE at the NE corner of the nationally recognized RORO (Roosevelt Row Arts District) near downtown Phoenix. Central Avenue is Phoenix’s Main Street and this latent corner was made imminently more street-friendly by TrueNorthStudio (a gentrification-opposed-local-developer) by flipping its imposing silvered glass inside-out at the street level, thus once again opening itself up to one of the liveliest street corners in PHX, which now has a prominent light rail stop on Central Avenue, just north of ASU’s DWTN Campus.
dialog adroitly spreads-out its cultural amenities, Taschen bookstore, coffee, bodega, and home goods ever outwards – along – and to – the street / lobby – by objectifying everything on ‘a level floor plane of light’ drawing everyone. A toe-kick-less-faceted-outwards ‘black coffee stand’ wraps out and around a bow-tie gypsum fireproofed steel column at north nexus of TEN-O-ONE entrances, pulling the more distant street / alley traffic through the space. The
Taschen
book shelving repurposed an existing tenants stepped-out-to-the-street-back-wall, which was instantly recognized for effectively projecting
Taschen’s
graphical XL,L,M,S format.
dialog is by design an intentionally anonymous, immaterial, open-ended space that presences program.
