Hatch’s new visitor-facing space dissolves the boundaries between production and public life, creating an environment where the craft of coffee is both visible and seamlessly integrated into everyday interaction. By transforming an active roastery and laboratory into a vibrant setting for observation, engagement, and informal use, the space achieves a balance of openness and functionality within a modest budget and timeline.
A frameless, floor-to-ceiling glass partition serves as the central intervention, reconfiguring the relationship between production and public zones. This transparent boundary allows visitors to remain connected to the roasting and brewing processes, while maintaining the flow of the space. By making the work visible, the partition brings the production environment into the visitor’s experience, enriching their connection to the craft.
At the center, a series of custom, bean-shaped tables create a flexible, adaptable space. Varying in height and scale, these modular elements can be arranged to suit different needs—from casual seating to educational interactions. Their organic form encourages movement and informal engagement, allowing the space to function as a café, lab, and gathering area all at once.
The material palette is purposeful, with plywood surfaces hand-stained using natural, food-safe dyes. This treatment highlights the grain of the wood, adding warmth and texture while reinforcing a commitment to low-impact finishes. These choices contribute to a tactile, sensory experience that deepens the visitor’s connection to the space.
The industrial shell remains exposed but is reinterpreted. Above, translucent polycarbonate panels diffuse light, reflecting the exposed systems of the ceiling and creating a dynamic visual rhythm. Below, the polished concrete floor grounds the space, providing continuity with its industrial origins while supporting the new functions.
The result is a space where production, learning, and interaction seamlessly coexist. It’s a place where the craft of coffee is not only made visible but also actively engages visitors, inviting them to experience and connect with the process in an open, adaptable, and welcoming environment.
