The Hargrave Street House transforms a classic Sydney terrace into a light-filled contemporary home, where exposed steel structure, refined materials, and reimagined spatial planning fuse heritage character with modern openness and clarity.
The reconstruction of the Hargrave Street House involved a complete reorganisation of the internal planning to meet the client’s desire for a series of generous, open-plan living spaces. Central to the design intent was the introduction of natural light and ventilation deep into the narrow urban footprint, transforming what was once a constrained terrace into a light-filled contemporary home.
The structural integrity of the existing fabric played a formative role in the new design. The retained masonry walls, while historically significant, were structurally fragile and required the insertion of a series of steel portal frames to provide essential lateral stability. Rather than concealing this intervention, the new architecture celebrates the structure, allowing the steel frame to remain exposed and carefully detailed. This expressive structural rhythm defines the spatial order of the reconfigured interior and subtly recalls the proportions and divisions of the original rooms, preserving a sense of memory within the new composition.
The use of structural steel extends beyond its stabilising function to become a unifying architectural language. It is carried through to the reconstructed rear garden façade, where steel frames support expansive glazing, and to the feature staircase, where finely crafted steel detailing reinforces the dialogue between strength and refinement.
Materiality plays a key role in tempering the robust structure. Finishes of Spanish limestone, recycled Oregon timber, and Belgian sisal introduce warmth, texture, and a tactile counterpoint to the crisp, white-plastered surfaces. The result is a house that fuses heritage and modernity, structure and space, precision and softness — an architecture of clarity and calm within the dense inner-urban context.
