Prototype Museum Hamburg

Built in 1902-1906, the listed factory building in Hamburg’s HafenCity is extensively renovated and converted into a museum. With its close proximity to the historic ‘Speicherstadt’ and its central location in the rapidly developing HafenCity, the building provides an important link between historical and modern constructions. The concept for the building combines the Prototype museum – an exhibition of vintage racing cars – with a restaurant, offices and event facilities, creating a place of diverse cultural and commercial, private and public use. A priority for this project is the preservation of the unique historic building. The facade, destroyed during the war, is reconstructed and carefully enhanced with new architectural elements. The brickwork in the basement and the historic steel structure in the exhibition space are left exposed. Through the careful addition of new features, the building takes on a character of its own without losing its original appearance.
