USTA Louis Armstrong Stadium
The reimagined Louis Armstrong Stadium represents the culmination of the USTA’s 10-year master plan to transform the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center into a world-class sports and entertainment venue. Armstrong, the second-largest stadium on campus, is located on the same footprint as the original stadium. It aligns with the USTA’s vision of creating open, daylit environments for tennis matches while offering weather protection when needed. The stadium’s innovative design furthers the master plan’s broader goal of creating a vibrant and efficient district that prioritizes both fan experience and operational excellence. Its hallmark feature, a groundbreaking natural ventilation system, makes it the first tennis stadium in the world to combine a naturally ventilated bowl with a retractable roof.
Using parametric modeling software, ROSSETTI optimized the placement of 14,250 overlapping terracotta louvers on the north and south façades to enhance airflow, provide shade, and protect spectators from rain, all while complementing the site’s architectural aesthetic. Perforated seating bowls, underground air pathways, and open concourses around the perimeter were strategically designed to maximize cross-ventilation, allowing air to flow freely throughout the venue and eliminating the need for energy-intensive air conditioning. This innovative approach reduced construction and operational costs while maintaining the tournament’s outdoor feel, delivering an authentic spectator experience. Sightlines were carefully refined to ensure every seat offers an intimate and unobstructed view of the court. Additionally, retail spaces, a terrace bar, and leasable areas were seamlessly integrated into the design, generating revenue streams that support the long-term financial success of the project.
Since its opening, Louis Armstrong Stadium has redefined the US Open experience, earning widespread acclaim for its innovative and sustainable design. Features such as passive cooling systems, water-efficient fixtures, and resource-conscious landscaping enhance its environmental performance and earned the stadium LEED Silver certification. It was also honored with the 2019 UNESCO Prix Versailles Award in the Sports Category, recognizing its elegant and contextually responsive architecture. Balancing beauty, functionality, and sustainability, the stadium has played a pivotal role in the record-breaking attendance of the US Open year after year. Together with the other campus improvements, it has elevated the fan experience and solidified its place as a key component of the USTA’s vision for a vibrant and enduring tennis campus.
