Set along a busy commercial street in downtown Toronto, this izakaya reimagines traditional Japanese spatial archetypes through a fully bespoke interior. Stripped to its shell, the space is rebuilt as a continuous landscape—rooted in the logic of the doma and irori.

A cast earthen floor forms the foundation, from which sculpted monoliths emerge—benches, counters, tables, and stair walls carved as one. These forms dissolve the boundary between furniture and architecture, anchoring the space in material continuity.

Above, a sequence of timber beams spans the length of the room. Though non-structural, they reference the darkened roof frames of vernacular dwellings, organizing space through rhythm and repetition.

At the center, a charcoal grill is integrated into a communal table, recalling the irori as hearth and gathering place. The bar, defined by quiet detailing, echoes the logic of the tokonoma—a framed space for display and exchange.

Material choices emphasize tactility and cohesion: compacted earth, charred cedar, plaster, leather, and woven bamboo form a restrained palette. Lighting is minimal and precise, drawing focus through contrast and shadow.
