In the midst of the beautiful green surroundings of Nijmegen-North, and built on the foundations of the historic farm De Groote Boel, we designed a contemporary restaurant: Brass. Our design studio was responsible for both the architectural and urban planning aspects of this hospitality project.
The design of Brass is a modern interpretation of a barn, incorporating subtle references to the past. Situated on an elevated plateau, the building preserves the historical foundations of the former barn while its elevated position provides impressive views over the Oosterhoutse plas.
The building is designed with a dual approach: closed on the north side to ensure privacy from the neighborhood, and open on the south side with expansive views of the lake. The transparent gable end serves as a striking landmark in the area; inviting and warmly illuminated. The wooden cladding radiates warmth and modestly blends into the surroundings, in line with the archetype of a barn. The roof is covered with matte zinc, meticulously detailed, and features integrated solar panels to ensure sustainability.
The design process was carried out in close consultation with the Spatial Planning and Cultural History committees of the municipality of Nijmegen, taking into account the cultural and historical values of the area.
The starting point for the design was a contemporary interpretation of a barn with a nod to the past
