Restoration Town Hall
The construction history of the former Wuustwezel town hall, in its current form, dates back to the early 19th century. The building contract was issued in 1829. A turbulent period, brought on by the Belgian Revolution, temporarily halted the works, and only the prison on the ground floor was completed. A few years later, with additional municipal subsidies, the building was finished and the “new town hall and prison” could finally be put into use. In its present appearance, the building is therefore largely 180 years old.
Following a meticulous restoration, the building once again radiates its former grandeur. The façades and major structural elements were restored, as well as the roof and windows.
Circulation was opened up and clarified by a wooden spiral staircase connecting the different levels. The entire attic was insulated and fitted with additional windows and views. Particular care went into a sustainable restoration with completely renewed building services. The building is primarily set up to function as an office or commercial space, but the technical provisions also allow for future residential use.
For the finishes, we used natural and authentic materials, reinterpreted in a contemporary way: Belgian bluestone, terracotta tiles, mineral paints, handmade wrought iron… Today, the building is a polished little gem shining once again in the heart of Wuustwezel.
