Landscape Design

The landscape design concept for the Taipei Performing Arts Center creates an open and flexible space around the seemingly simple but complex theatre building. The green concentrates itself in two elongated, slightly raised gardens along the South and North flanks of the new Theatre Square. These robust but elegant ‘proscenium’ gardens (South Garden and North Garden) are composed of a continuous, undulating lawn and a selection of decorative, characteristic trees. Circular cut-outs create intimate squares under the trees. The raised podia of the North and South Gardens define the theatre square, while the stepped edge along the West side of the square, shaded by the foliage of a double row of trees, forms its lush green ‘backdrop’.

All garden elements offer ample space for sitting and social interaction, and create a clear contrast between the relaxing, decorative green and the active and functional urban plaza. Thanks to this flexible and practical landscape organization, cultural performances (spontaneous or planned), night and food markets, large scale festivities and social gatherings, can be organized on the square whereas intimacy is provided in the green areas around it.

Interior Advisory & Curtain Design

Inside Outside was also involved in the development of the building’s interior colour concept (all public spaces BLUE, all studios PINK, all backstage space dark BROWN!), advised on interior finishing materials and chair upholsteries and designed the stage curtains for two main auditoriums. For the round auditorium with an oval shaped stage opening, an organic ‘fleece’ was designed: three stretched, translucent, light blue screens slide down and side-ways to shape numerously variable stage openings. In the main auditorium a front curtain of light blue glass fiber appears sideways from its hidden storage. Connecting to walls and ceiling seamlessly it completes the ‘blue box’ that is the concept for this room.
