Greek Revival House on Martha’s Vineyard

Having summered in a modest — and outdated — cottage on a large property on the Vineyard Sound for many years, the owners realized the need to build a new house that would accommodate their four growing children and future generations. Designing a house that would be appropriate for the family, the site and the traditions of the Vineyard was the priority. The new house is inspired by the island’s Greek Revival vernacular, but with an asymmetry that is appropriately informal for the rural site. An L-shaped plan and one-and-one-half story height camouflage the size of the six-bedroom house.

A great room punctuated by a series of French doors on either side is the center gathering spot for extended families and friends and serves to separate the homeowners’ suite (including main bedroom, dressing rooms, main bath and a private study) from the common rooms and children’s and guest bedrooms.
