Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway
丨澳大利亚悉尼-1
The missing link in Sydney's active transport network
Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway
Project Story
The new cycleway ramp at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge will provide a safe, accessible, and enjoyable experience for people of all ages and cycling abilities—while honouring the heritage and iconic stature of the bridge itself.
丨澳大利亚悉尼-6
As the most heavily used cycle route in Sydney, the Harbour Bridge cycleway accommodates approximately 2,000 bike trips each weekday. Currently, cyclists face the challenge of navigating 55 steps to connect between the main bridge path and Bradfield Park North. The new ramp will remove this barrier, creating a seamless and accessible link.
The new cycleway ramp at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a transformative piece of civic infrastructure, designed to provide a safe, accessible, and enjoyable experience for people of all ages and cycling abilities—while respecting the heritage, cultural significance, and iconic presence of the bridge itself.
Currently the most heavily used cycle route in Sydney, the Harbour Bridge cycleway carries around 2,000 bike trips each weekday. However, cyclists are currently required to navigate 55 stairs to connect between the main bridge path and Bradfield Park North—posing a barrier to accessibility and limiting broader use. The new ramp will eliminate this obstacle, delivering a seamless and inclusive connection to the bridge.
The 190-metre-long structure has been carefully designed in response to its complex context, balancing cyclist safety and comfort with sensitivity to surrounding heritage, architectural character, and parkland setting. Its alignment, geometry, and detailing are the result of deep collaboration between architecture, engineering, industrial design, and landscape, integrating functional performance with thoughtful placemaking.
Composed of elegant, interwoven curves, the ramp’s serpentine form suggests movement and lightness. It is engineered for durability, constructability, and long-term ease of maintenance, while maintaining a minimal visual impact on the Harbour Bridge and Bradfield Park. Off-centre pier placements and a central sweeping beam allow the structure to harmonise with its environment, reducing overshadowing and preserving views.
The ramp’s paving design draws inspiration from local marine life, with two intertwined eels—symbolising the Gadigal and Cammeraygal peoples—representing spiritual and physical connection across this historically significant crossing point.
The broader project includes upgrades to pedestrian and cycling connections along Alfred and Lavender Streets, and the creation of a new public plaza adjacent to Bradfield Park. Featuring seating, a water fountain, and a bike repair station, the plaza offers a welcoming and functional civic space for commuters, locals, and visitors alike.
Setting a new benchmark for integrating active transport infrastructure into sensitive heritage contexts, the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway ramp is a visionary investment in the future of sustainable mobility and inclusive city-making.
