SoHo Loft

Originally a factory and later an artist studio in SoHo, the owner wanted to transform a poorly renovated commercial loft into a living space appropriate to the building’s history and to a young professional woman who likes to entertain. Taking advantage of the few original details that remained (including cast-iron columns) and reinventing or restoring other features (such as a wall of oversized wooden windows and a reclaimed steel door), the apartment evokes its past, but exudes an airy, contemporary character.

The front entrance of the loft was relocated to open into the large sunlit front room and to see one of the original columns upon entry. The floor plan was also adjusted so that the freight elevator would no longer open directly into the apartment, but rather into the building hall, for both aesthetics and safety.
