‘Z’ Space
Pound Ridge, NY
‘Z’ Space, a new 1,200-square-foot artists’ residency studio and pavilion for the not-for-profit Oberon Foundation in Pound Ridge, NY, has broken ground. Founded by Ben Blad and Kevin Gan, the Oberon Foundation recognizes the importance of rest, research, and retreat in the creative process, and supports artists by offering access to a purpose-designed studio alongside an existing house.

The architectural concept engages with the idea of z-time—a conceptual link to the 24 time zones of Earth—and is anchored within a grove of tall, old-growth trees. Two ramps extend from the elevated studio, embracing the outdoors and creating an extended threshold into the landscape. Tucked into this natural setting, Z’ Space aspires to the highest ecological standards, with a particular focus on water management and preservation.
Windows are carefully placed to frame views and connect interior and exterior while preserving wall space for art. A stepped seating area welcomes small gatherings, informal rest, or performances—an adaptable zone for shared or solitary moments within nature.

Artist residencies are more commonly experienced in adapted historic homes, estates, shared institutional spaces, or as enhancements to established programs—often through repurposed cabins or barn-like structures. Among the numerous residencies in the U.S., Z’ Space stands out as a rare, purpose-built facility in the last decade of a thriving and diverse residency field.
Fully equipped for sound and light, the studio is designed to be used freely by visual and performing artists or small collectives.

A green roof, a shallow rainwater collection pond, and a rain garden collectively support natural stormwater management, with attention to the nearby pond and the site’s flood risks. Raised on exposed concrete piers, the elevated structure creates a covered outdoor space for arrival and gathering. Preservation of the surrounding woodland is central to the design, encouraging rewilding, reducing maintenance, and fostering biodiversity. The building will be geothermally heated and cooled.

The emergence of small, independent organizations like Oberon in the broader artist residency landscape represents a rare and meaningful contribution to the arts ecosystem—especially in such close proximity to New York City. Z’ Space marks a new legacy: purpose-built, ecologically attuned, and dedicated to supporting artists with time and space to create.
