Science campus PTB Braunschweig

With the new knowledge campus, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig is gaining a prestigious location for research and emphasises the international importance of the PTB as one of the world’s leading metrological institutes. The aim is to restructure the campus area and create a representative, central area on the site that enhances the identity of the entire location and at the same time harmonises ecological conservation and functionality. The 10-hectare wooded competition area is located in the centre of the PTB site and forms the entrance to the campus, which is accessed via Bundesallee. Together with the landscape planners Ensphere, DFZ is developing an urban planning approach that envisages an open centre in the centre of the area, which integrates the various functions of the campus as a connecting open space and promotes a lively exchange. Important key buildings such as the central and seminar building, the training centre, the time centre, the future energy centre and the library as a pavilion in the park are strategically positioned around the centre and give the campus its spatial framework. The surrounding green spaces will be retained and continue to characterise the image of the site. The central and seminar building is the visual and functional heart of the knowledge campus. To ensure good accessibility, the buildings are positioned in the south of the campus and serve as a central arrival and meeting point. Energy-efficient technologies, sustainable materials and innovative environmental concepts minimise the ecological footprint of the campus and promote an awareness of resource-conserving behaviour. The knowledge campus is a place that combines innovation and sustainability, blends harmoniously into the natural landscape and defines a distinctive identity for the future of PTB.
