Ulrich Müther Lifeguard-Station

This visualization series of the lifeguard station by Ulrich Müther and Dietrich Otto was created in spring 2011 as a personal project.

What you see here is a hybrid of the two stations built in the 1970s and ’80s in Binz on the island of Rügen – only one of which still exists today.

Ulrich Müther was a German civil engineer who became known for his many striking concrete shell structures.

After the fall of the GDR, many of Müther’s buildings were abandoned or even torn down. One of the lifeguard stations was renovated in 2004 and has since been used as an outpost of the local registry office.

We at xoio used this bold, sculptural building as a visual study, working from photo references to explore different aspects of image composition and layout.

A unique feature of this series is the varied use of color grading across the images – each with its own mood, yet all fitting together as a cohesive whole.
