FK was engaged by client Ashe Morgan to revitalise the ground floor entry and lobby experience for the commercial tower at 9 Hunter Street in Sydney’s CBD.

Its prime location between George and Pitt streets has direct underground access to Wynyard Station and is a short walk to hubs Martin Place and Circular Quay.

Design consideration was made with respect to the neighbouring 1800s building in the form of exposed brick, lime wash and brass in order to emphasise this historic structure.

The extensive redesign of the façade utilised the established rhythms and proportionality. This has resulted in a visual desirability which reinforces the site’s urban grain. The design’s elegant simplicity also creates an inviting interior with the use of frameless glass and lightly toned natural materials.

The large-scale, high-end lobby refurbishment improves flow from the street to the lift through the creation of a simplified and thorough entryway.

An undulating ceiling made from approx. 3160 hanging timber dowels is a most impressive aspect of the scheme.

This natural warmth is continued through to the busy and vibrant café side where The Grounds of Alexandria operate the Hunter House Cafe. Featured within are elements like white-washed timber veneers and bronzed mirrors and lift returns. The inclusion of natural greenery is added to existing columns which have been cladded in bronze. Once established, the greenery will eventually take over these columns entirely.

All the built-in furniture pieces create a ‘floating’ motif, ensuring the interior looks and feels light and off-the-ground.
