Sir William Borlase's -Brief
Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School approached Envoplan for the re-design, and build of one of their buildings to improve their washroom facility’s, classrooms and communal spaces as part of a 3 stage master plan.
Our Challenge
Due to the complex nature of the building having multiple previous extensions and alterations, we had to come up with a scheme that was sympathetic with these modifications across a number of fronts. This involved complex structural designs for internal alterations along with the reconfiguration of the buildings mechanical and electrical systems. The project also had to be delivered within a very tight program of 8 weeks which was successfully achieved despite unforeseen discovery of asbestos during the project which had to be safely managed and disposed of.
Envoplan's Solution
An open-plan, unisex washroom design was adopted incorporating full height, fully private toilet cubicles and communal hand wash areas. ‘School friendly’ products and materials were used to ensure maximum durability and minimal ongoing maintenance without compromising on the look and feel of the space. Other environmentally friendly aspects were also considered throughout the design with LED lighting, energy efficient hand dryers and water saving toilet cisterns. The design was carefully considered from a safeguarding aspect with no blind spots within the washrooms for bullying but at the same time the spaces maintained a very high level of personal privacy for all users. Overall the scheme was a huge success for the school being delivered on time and within budget ready for the September term!
