SANAA Glass Pavilion, Toledo Museum of Art
Hi Everybody. I happened to be in Toledo the other day so I made a trip to the art museum to check out the Glass Pavilion. The pictures aren’t spectacular but maybe they will be helpful for the summer project.
The Glass Pavilion sits across from the Museum’s main building, a grand scale Greek Revival built in 1901. Separated by a busy road, The Glass Pavilion is an intriguing counterpoint to the
main building
.
Walking around the building, the all glass facade oscillates between transparency and opacity as reflections and glare vary with one’s perspective and position.
The pavilion’s main courtyard opens to the Northwest. The space is situated between two rooms enclosed by solid walls and is connected to the pavilion’s main corridor.
Light from the main courtyard draws the user through the museum’s main corridor connecting galleries, the glass blowing studio, and cafe.
Within some of the museum’s spaces, reflections begin to overlap and confuse visual perception.
The museum uses the spaces between the exterior and interior for heating and cooling. A guard explained to me that in heating the pavilion they recycle heat from the glass blowing studio.
