The core principle behind the reconstruction of the existing pavilion was the retention and enhancement of the building’s heritage values, after a fire destroyed most of the pavilions in 2011. The Fender Katsalidis team recreated the profile of the building, restoring the continuity between it and the adjoining pavilion buildings.

The internal and external environments that were created celebrate the presence of the building and enhance the Precinct. Internally, the volume and proportions of the major rooms were maintained and enhanced. A basement meant the full spatial qualities of the ground level rooms could be gained.

Movement from the heritage eastern courtyard to the heritage western courtyard is now direct whereas previously it was circuitous. Each courtyard is now visible from the other. As a result, the major pathway from Marcus Clark Street to Edinburgh Avenue in the west is much improved.

Remnants of the fire can be seen in the presence of A. Baker, where burnt walls have been preserved to form a major element in the presentation of the space.
