Text description provided by the architects. Studio Schicketanz designed this unique, multi-family architectural compound for studio founder Mary Ann Schicketanz and her son and his young family. Encapsulating a small home for his family of four and an ADU for Mary Ann, the compound is located within a planned community adjacent to the Los Padres National Forest. Mary Ann's family collaborated with her team to create the affordable, energy-efficient homes so that they would sit lightly on the land. Method Homes was selected for its exceptional manufactured housing capabilities, which allowed her team to achieve an efficient, high-quality and precise design with environmentally responsible sourcing on a quick turnaround.

The property includes two all-electric homes with solar and battery systems; efficient wood stoves and passive house strategies ensure sustainability, while HRVs maintain indoor air quality. The design maximizes natural ventilation and daylight, with native landscaping minimizing environmental impact. The five-acre parcel on which the homes sit is part of a former 22,000-acre historic cattle ranch that is now a nature conservancy. Committed to preserving trees and restoring native grasslands, the community dedicates half of the land to open space and features existing wells and a solar system that provides 179% of power needs to residents.

Managed by the Santa Lucia Conservancy and the local Design Review Board, the community enforces native landscape protection, wildlife corridors and dark sky standards. Sustainable practices include charging electric cars on-site and reusing treated effluent for irrigation, aligning with EPA "Water Sense" standards for plumbing. Residents also benefit from a community center and large community garden, as well as amenities such as restaurants, a coffee shop, pools, and play facilities nearby.
