BOXES Narrow Hall is a street micro-renewal project tailored to the typical residential blocks in Chengdu, China. The city where the project is located, Chengdu, has been awarded the title ofChina’s Happiest Cityfor 16 consecutive years, and it is a metropolis that strikes a balance between lifestyle, development and freedom.

The project is embedded in the 21st Century Garden Residential Area— a multi-story neighborhood with 20 years of accumulated life vibes — in the west gate area of Chengdu. Together with the surrounding residential compounds built in different phases, it forms Beisen Road Community, a large-scale residential zone with a permanent population of around 30,000 and a strong flavor of street life.
Across the street lies West Village Courtyard, designed by the renowned architect Liu Jiakun. As an urban landmark that blends community life with artistic poetry, it not only serves local residents but also draws literary and artistic crowds to visit.
Therefore, the project is positioned as an Art Multi-Function Hall, symbolizing the integration of art into the bustling streets and alleys.

The project is tucked away in a corner of several ground-floor residential-to-commercial shops along Beixin Alley, with only a 2-meter-wide street-facing frontage. How can we effectively create its allure? Based on objective factors such as the current site conditions, temporary erection control limits, implementation strength, and functional versatility, we have summarized three difficult design challenges:
Narrow, elongated and fragmented, space-limited. The site is a long and narrow area with a total depth of nearly 13.7 meters and a width of only 2–3 meters, divided into indoor and outdoor sections. The indoor space measures 3.1 meters wide and 8 meters long. The outdoor storefront is 5.7 meters away from the public sidewalk and only 2 meters wide, not including the temporary street stall area in front of the shops on Beixin Alley. How can we connect this three-segmented elongated space effectively?
Policies, Costs and Structure, Renovation-limited. For the outdoor space, new construction is prohibited under the additional illegal construction clauses of the Regulations on the Administration of Illegal Construction in Chengdu. Despite the prevalence of existing illegal structures in Beixin Alley, any signs of outdoor renovation will trigger anonymous complaints. As for the indoor space, it is constrained by the division of the old residential building’s brick-concrete structure. The shop was originally split into two equal bedrooms, and the dividing wall—built with urban brick—must be retained. Conversion to a steel structure is not feasible within the project’s budget constraints.
Functional Versatility. As a multi-function hall, the BOXES Narrow Hall is a social space with integrated functions that combines exhibition, salon, meeting and event hosting, featuring flexible forms and variable scenarios to meet diverse needs.

BOXES+ Function Integration
In response to the aforementioned constraints and requirements, we have proposed a solution strategy named “BOXES+ Function Integration”. Guided by the principles of community integration and flexible adaptation, we embed the “Color BOXES” that are integrated with the street and lane environment, and connect the narrow and elongated BOXES halls, ultimately forming a multi-functional hall that meets diverse needs. Meanwhile, by constructing platforms across the entire outdoor street area, we provide the neighborhood with public seating for rest as well as a number of interesting outdoor activity spaces.

Why extract the colors of lanes for design?
During the project implementation, the residents and daily life of the entire street were also involved in the scheme finalization process from time to time. Three rounds of multiple anonymous complaints were received respectively at the stages of construction enclosure, red brick delivery and steel structure delivery, all from the local households. Most of them were long-term elderly residents, some were newly settled families accompanying their children for studies, and others were temporary tenants… As a result of these complaints, the design team specially presented the scheme to the urban management department in the end. Precisely because of this, the vibrant, down-to-earth vibe of Beixin Lane has been truly and influentially integrated into the Color BOXES. In the process of design and product selection, the colors of the street’s roofs, windows, drying laundry, temporary structures, guardrails, ceramic tiles, street trees, decorations, as well as the non-removable internal red brick walls… all have become the inspiration for the Color BOXES.

After the implantation of functions, the space has become diverse and adaptable. It incorporates various elements with different materials, colors and combinations, such as tiled raised platforms, manhole covers, benches, flower beds, sofas, boxes and cabinets, which can meet all kinds of temporary requirements for its multi-functional use.

BOXES Narrow Hall is primarily used for art or commercial exhibitions, but it has a compact space. Therefore, we transformed electrical wires and combined them with galvanized pipes to create new linear connections on the exposed precast slabs and red brick walls. Through several gravity-defying galvanized pipes with circuits installed on the ceiling, we provide more multi-dimensional layout options for exhibitions.
