This is a second phase of work on same island as in the first part of the semester - Nämdö - progressing from urban strategy, functional organisation to focus on structural detail and envelope.
"from scattered and undefined to coherent and inviting"
Sand, Nämdö, Stockholm Archipelago
Studio Island, autumn semester 2025Team: Melina Ellvin, Oksana Pidleteichuk
Nämdö, located in the outer Stockholm archipelago, is defined by a fragile ecological context and a cultural landscape formed through historical fishing, agricultural, and maritime practices. The island supports approximately 80 permanent residents, with high seasonal population increases during summer. As the Baltic Sea's most recently established marine national park, Nämdö faces a dual condition of environmental protection and increased human impact. Our study focuses on Sand, the identified local center where the library, museum, and community center are located, which forms the basis for the proposal.
Upon arriving at the site, it is immediately perceived as a large, open space with undefined areas and little sense of structure or direction. Existing functions are limited on the island, and locals express the need for services and workshops. In response, the project aims to transform the area into a coherent and attractive centre, primarily serving local residents while also inviting visitors to explore, meet, and participate in shared activities. Starting from urban strategy the proposal strengthens the site's identity by reprogramming existing buildings and introducing new functions.
The old library building is converted into housing taking into account usage of the second floor of the building for this function, while a part of the community house istransformed into a nursery considering a feeling of privacy of that territory. In addition, a new building is addedadjacent to the current museum, giving a permanent space for themarine exhibition room.
Two new buildings form the core of the proposal. The placement of which is used strategically to frame the site and define a sequence of interconnected outdoor spaces, encouraging interaction between different activities.
A workshop building provides space for making, storage, and a recycling centre, directly addressing the issue of scattered waste and enabling productive use of materials. A new library establishes a permanent environment for learning and knowledge exchange. Both buildings are designed with flexible interior layouts, allowing them to adapt to local needs such as service rooms, gathering spaces, and multipurpose community functions.
Both of the buildings have a cold wooden structure. It's constructed of a frame of glulam beams which runs along the outside of the building and is carried by these pillars that also become the feet of the building. This structure results in no walls being load bearing which allows them to easily be changed if needed.
