Text description provided by the architects. C.S.C Residence is a residential renovation project located in Taipei, reconfiguring a 40-year-old multi-storey home to support contemporary living through spatial reorganization rather than structural replacement. The residence has a total floor area of 311 square metres, including balconies.
The design is organised around an integrated public zone that brings together an open kitchen with a cooking island, a circular dining table accommodating up to ten people, and a dedicated tea-making area. Upon entry, the kitchen island anchors one side of the space and is illuminated by a continuous row of windows positioned above the worktop. This horizontal opening functions as the primary source of natural daylight for the public area, allowing light to penetrate deep into the interior and shaping the spatial atmosphere.
At the centre of the plan, the round dining table establishes a focal point for daily activities and social gatherings. Further inside, the tea-making area and tea bar extend the public zone, supported by additional windows that enhance overall brightness. Through this layered arrangement, the shared spaces remain naturally lit throughout the day, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
Private and wellness-related functions—including the master bedroom, a guest bedroom, a home gym, and a sauna with hot and cold pools—are aligned along the elongated façade of the building. This organization maintains spatial continuity while clearly distinguishing between public and private areas.
A staircase adjacent to the tea-making area leads to the upper level, conceived as an open-plan environment. This floor accommodates a home theatre, an open study, and a bar, with subtle changes in floor level used to articulate different functions. These level variations add spatial depth while preserving visual continuity and fluid circulation.
The entertainment room opens towards a landscaped garden pond through full-height glazed openings. When weather conditions allow, the openings can be fully opened, visually and physically connecting the interior with the outdoor environment despite the residence's urban context.
