Situated on an estuary close to the ocean in Wainscott, NY, this home and studio compound was designed to meet the personal and professional needs of a renowned artist. The main house with attached guest wing, a free-standing sculpture studio and kiln, a pool and cabana with shade pavilion, and a variety of outdoor areas provide spaces for living, working, making, relaxing, entertaining, and being in nature.

JAPANESE DESIGN INSPIRATION

Set amidst a unique landscape of indigenous grasses and other plantings, the home exudes a casual elegance and a Zen-like calm. The architectural forms are modest, reflecting the influences of local Wainscott farmhouses and Japanese design. The interiors facilitate indoor-outdoor enjoyment and the framed views of the landscape inspire a deep appreciation for the timeless beauty of nature.

ARTIST’S STUDIO

A very serious creative outlet for the owner is ceramic arts. To address this need, a free-standing ceramics studio with indoor (electric) and outdoor (gas-fired) kilns was also incorporated into the site.
