Casablanca Urban Agriculture

Duoars are informal settlements, which take their point of departure in old villages surrounding big cities in Morocco. Their rapid growth leads to sudden changes of land use from agriculture to urban land without a proper infrastructure backbone. Our scheme is not a masterplan but a set of tools which could be applicable to similar contexts in other areas of urban Morocco. The tools included a new water system that aims to diminish the risk of flood through the introduction of permeable edges and ponds. Other ideas deal with alternative ways of using urban agriculture for the improvement of ground soil through the use of opuntias and fig trees which in turn enrich the soil with nitrogen.
