GeoCenter Møns Klint and its accompanying boardwalk exemplify environmentally integrated design, bringing visitors closer to the dramatic cliffs and ancient landscapes of Møn. By blending architecture into the natural terrain and prioritising accessibility, PLH created a cultural landmark that enhances appreciation of the surrounding nature.

Summary

Telling the story of Møns Klint through design

Winning an international competition, PLH was chosen to design the GeoCenter as a visitor experience embedded in the natural beauty of Møns Klint.

Designing in harmony with nature

Our architectural concept reflects the cliffs and forest, using raw, natural materials like zinc, timber, and stone. The main exhibition hall is submerged in the hillside, preserving the landscape’s integrity while evoking a cave-like atmosphere that aligns with the site’s geographic narrative. And in a small but telling gesture, the building was curved to save a single tree.

Nature and accessibility combined

The GeoCenter features passive design strategies, such as natural ventilation, solar orientation, and energy-efficient LED lighting – pioneering for its time. The 267-meter boardwalk, completed in 2013, extends accessibility through the forest to the cliff edge, blending seamlessly into its environment while enabling all visitors to enjoy the unique landscape. In 2025 Møns Klint was recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A model for architecture and inclusion

The GeoCenter has received multiple awards, including Vordingborg Municipality’s Architecture Prize and the Archizinc International Prize, and was nominated for prestigious honors such as the World Architecture Festival. The boardwalk has been praised for setting a national standard for inclusion.
